Chapter 4: Perpetrators and Victims of Crime

There were new terms discussed in this chapter that I found useful. The first one was a National Violence Against Women (NVAW) Survey which was sponsored by the National Institute of Justice to obtain information about the offenses against women. What was done was that they surveyed woman and men by telephone and found out that about 500,000 women and 185,000 men are stalked by someone every year. The study also found the causes of intimate partner violence are separate from the causes of general crime. Intimate partner violence are physical assaults between either boyfriend or girlfriends or also ex husbands and wives. One important term is crime profiling. Crime profiling is the analysis of criminal incidents to isolate the precise characteristics of offenders, victims, and situations in order to better understand and prevent crime. Another is offender profiles. Here, it is develop by examining large number of similar crimes to look for common patterns through offender backgrounds such as physical or social characteristics or history. Another profile is called crime scene profiles. Here the examination of the circumstances surrounds criminal incidents in search of reasonable patterns associated with criminal offending. Here, it is found through NVCS that households with six or more members have a burglary victim rate two times more than households with only two or three members. Finally, victim profiles are the examiniation of large number of comparable criminal incidents to find patterns of the different types of victims. What was found by the NCVS was that blacks are victimized at a rate of 44 per 1000 households.
